Clashes in Western Sahara

After a 30-year cease-fire brokered by the United Nations, tensions have been increasing between Morocco and the Algerian-backed Polisario Front in Western Sahara. There are conflicting reports about clashes between the two. Some reports state that the Polisario Front attacked a Moroccan military outpost in the disputed area. The Polisario Front claimed that the Moroccan military broke their cease-fire agreement. There are reports that the Moroccan government denied that there had been any armed conflict and that the 30-year cease-fire remains intact.

Tensions between Morocco and Algeria are high at this time. Western Sahara is a disputed territory, and the Polisario advocates Western Sahara’s independence from Morocco.

Avoid any travel to the area. A militarised boundary separates the Moroccan-controlled part of Western Sahara from the rest of the territory, Mauritania, and Algeria. There is a 30 kilometre militarised zone containing landmines.
