Alagoas State in Brazil has 3 times the number of dengue fever cases compared to last year

So far in 2012, health officials in Alagoas have recorded a total of 22,681 confirmed cases of dengue fever. This number is three times the number reported in 2011. There have been 12 deaths so far. Due to incomplete reporting, lack of access to health care in some areas, and the fact that many persons with dengue fever may not seek medical care and be reported to health authorities, there may be many more cases in the community than are reported. Travellers to these areas can reduce their risk of exposure to dengue fever virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
