Authorities declare dengue fever epidemic in Ecuador

With a total of 654 cases of dengue fever and 1 case of dengue haemorrhagic fever, health authorities have declared that an epidemic state exists. Many of the cases have been reported from the tropical areas, especially the province of Guayas.

Travellers to these areas can reduce their risk of exposure to dengue fever virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever may not seek medical care and may not be reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community that are not reported.
