Civil Unrest Possible Following Lifting of Martial Law - South Korea

In the late evening hours (local time) on 03 December, President Yoon Suk Yeol declared a Martial Law which was rejected by the National Assembly hours later. The surprise declaration came as the president accused the main opposition of “paralyzing” the government with “anti-state” activities. As of the morning on 04 December, over 9 senior aides of the president have offered to resign from their positions. The opposition has also announced their plans to begin the impeachment process for the president unless he steps down.

Violent unrest is expected due to the current political climate across South Korea. Heightened security has been deployed in high-risk localities as well as near prominent government installations.
