The Japanese military is helping with the cleanup of Friday’s snowstorm since thousands of residents in villages and towns across Japan remain stranded three days after this snowstorm. Traffic has been paralyzed, and power outages continue in some areas. Transportation of goods has left supermarkets and stores empty in many areas. In Yamanashi and Nagano prefecture, some areas have received the highest levels of snow ever recorded.
The storm was moving northward and was expected to strengthen by today, bringing the possibility of heavy snow, blizzards and avalanches as well as high waves in eastern and northern Japan. In Tokyo late Saturday, rain had melted most of the snow in the city, however, more snow is forecast for the areas around Tokyo later this week.
