LĂ€s merHigh Number of Tick-borne Encephalitis in Switzerland
Through the end of October (2019), there have been 251 people infected with the virus that causes tick-borne encephalitis (the 2nd-highest number since the year 2000). It is anticipated that the government will initiate total vaccination of the population before the next transmission season (2020).
RÄd
The risk for travellers is low, unless the travellerâs activities bring them into contact with ticks. Travellers in countries where this infection occurs should avoid tick habitats such as fields and forests where possible. Daily tick checks and prompt removal of an attached tick will help to reduce the risk of infection. Vaccination (only available in Europe) may be considered, especially if itineraries involve extensive hiking and camping in tick habitats.
