Learn moreBig Increase in Dengue Fever in Honduras
The total number of people infected with dengue fever has increased dramatically this year from 74 reported cases a few weeks ago to 3,600 cases. At least 122 of these have serious complications called dengue haemorrhagic fever. The most affected municipalities include Tegucigalpa, San Pedro Sula, Puerto Cortés, Olancho, and El Progreso. The department of Colón is also affected.
Advice
The risk of exposure will vary from place to place and may be high in many localities.
All travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
