Chikungunya virus found in Kerala State, India

Health officials have reported 14 cases of chikungunya fever in Kerala State in December. Thirteen of the cases occurred in the capital of the state, Thiruvananthapuram.

Travellers to this area can reduce their risk of exposure to chikungunya fever virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with chikungunya fever may not seek medical care and may not be reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community that are not reported.
