Learn moreChikungunya virus travelling with Australians in SE Asia
Health authorities across Australia have noticed that a record number of Australians are returning home after having contracted chikungunya fever during visits to various countries in SE Asia including Bali, India, Singapore and Papua New Guinea. A total of 107 cases have been recorded in the first 9 months compared to only 19 all of last year. Chicungunya virus infections may have long lasting health consequences. Travellers to areas where chikungunya fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure to this virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with chikungunya fever may not seek medical care and may not be reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community that are not reported.
