COVID-19 Precautionary Measures in Tanzania (2 December Update)

Can a resident enter the country?

  • Yes

  • Citizens and residents are allowed to enter.

Can a foreigner enter the country?

  • Yes

  • Foreigners can enter the country.

Is transit allowed through the country?

  • Yes

  • Transit services are allowed; however, all travellers must have a confirmed ticket for their final destination. If confirmation of the final destination is on a separate ticket, the traveller will need to get a transit visa at their own expense at Dar es Salaam.

Is a test required on arrival?

  • No with exceptions

  • Travellers will be screened on arrival and could be required to take a COVID-19 test if they are showing symptoms of COVID-19.

Is a test certificate allowed?

  • Yes

  • Test certificates issued by the foreign countries are accepted.

  • No with exceptions

  • Border entry requirements by the government of Tanzania continue to change. At this time, the government of Tanzania has removed the requirement for a negative COVID-19 test.

    • A traveller’s airline or country of origin may require a COVID-19 certificate upon departure. If so, then Tanzania may also request the traveller to present the certificate on arrival.

Is quarantine required on arrival?

  • No with exception

  • Quarantine is not generally required on arrival. You may be required to quarantine for 14 days if a COVID-19 test is completed on arrival.

  • Cargo drivers will be quarantined at a government-designated hotel or within their trucks during their stay.

Entry form required? (health or other)

  • Yes

  • All arrivals will need to complete a “Health Surveillance Form” while on the plane or any other transportation and submit the completed form to the authorities upon arrival.

Airline restrictions

  • Minimal

  • International and domestic flights are operating.

  • Flight services between Tanzania and Kenya have resumed.

  • Health screening measures are installed at the entry ports including airports.

  • Crew members will need to provide details of their final destinations at the entry ports. Only one stop will be allowed at a government-designated location.

Border restrictions

  • Moderate

  • Borders are open except the Nakonde border with Zambia, which is currently closed to passenger traffic but open for cargo movement.

  • Tanzania is open for tourism.

Curfew restrictions

  • Minimal

  • There is no curfew at this time.

Social distancing restrictions

  • Minimal

  • There are no restrictions on public gatherings.

Internal travel restrictions

  • Moderate

  • TAZARA is currently operating domestic trains.

  • There are no restrictions on intercity or interstate travel.

  • Only three passengers are allowed per vehicle.

  • Yes

  • Markets are currently open until 18:00.

Accommodations open?

  • Yes

  • Hotels in the country must go through a COVID-19 certification process for approval to open, and official documents must be placed at the entrances of all facilities.

Restaurants open?

  • Yes with exceptions

  • Many restaurants are closed. However, restaurants that are allowed to reopen can provide take away service.

Bars and cafes open?

  • Yes

  • Few bars and cafes are open.

Beaches and tourism sites open?

  • Yes

  • Tourist facilities in the country must go through a COVID-19 certification process for approval to open, and official documents must be placed at the entrances of all facilities.

Events allowed?

  • Yes

  • Social events, such as weddings, are allowed.

  • Sporting events and activities have resumed.

Museums and heritage sites open?

  • Yes

  • Most non-essential services and businesses are open.

Places of worship open?

  • Yes

  • Churches and other places of worship are allowed to reopen.

Masks required in public?

  • No

  • Masks are recommended, however, there is no requirement to wear a mask.

  • Some schools have resumed classes.
