Dengue fever around the world (India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka)

Cases, deaths and outbreaks of dengue fever are being reported by the following countries:

  • India - various amounts of dengue fever cases are being reported by the following states: Behar, Delhi, Karnataka, Maharashtra (Mumbai), Pune, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh.
  • Sri Lanka - as of mid-November, more than 36,600 cases: most affected localities include Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara 2300, Kandy, Jaffna, Kurunegala, and Kegalle.
  • Pakistan - Punjab province (Rawalpindi)

Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
