Dengue fever in El Salvador is public health challenge

At least 1,378 cases of dengue fever have been reported, along with the death of a 10 month old baby. These cases include 475 infections in the capital city of San Salvador. The most affected departments include Ahuachapán, Santa Ana, San Salvador and La Unión. There may be many more unreported cases since counting and reporting may be hampered by lack of local access to health care, and many persons with mild illness may not seek health care. Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure to dengue fever virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
