Communities of Stykraal, Tswaing, Mooiplaas, Vlakplaas and surrounding areas in the greater Sekhukhune district municipality have been warned to avoid consuming canal water that is contaminated with typhoid bacteria. In early November, more than 60 school children were infected after consuming contaminated water from the canal, and 2 of them died.
Advice
Travellers to the affected area can reduce their risk of exposure to typhoid fever by being cautious and avoiding consuming contaminated food or water. Vaccination against typhoid fever should be considered, especially if unsafe food cannot be avoided.
