Large outbreak of hepatitis A in villages in Veracruz, Mexico

At least 200 cases of hepatitis A have been reported from the villages of Mixtla de Altamirano and San Juan Texhuacan and surrounding areas. Lack of potable water and inadequate sanitation are being blamed for this outbreak. Travellers should be aware that hepatitis A is preventable through vaccination. When there is a risk of exposure to hepatitis A virus, travellers can reduce this risk by obtaining the vaccine prior to travelling and by exercising caution and avoiding consuming contaminated food and water.
