Malaria is major health risk in most of Cambodia in spite of decreasing numbers of cases

In 2012, a total of 63,039 malaria cases were reported in the first eleven months. This number represents a decrease of around 35 percent. There were 40 reported deaths. In Cambodia, malaria occurs most often in the rainy season and in border, forest and mountainous provinces. Nevertheless, with the exception of the temple complex at Angkor Wat, Phnom Penh, and around Lake Tonle Sap, there is a risk of exposure throughout the country. Travellers to this region can reduce their risk of exposure to malaria by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Anti-malaria medication is recommended.
