Romania, Bulgaria Join Schengen Zone

On 1 January 2025, Romania and Bulgaria scrapped land border controls to become full members of the European Union’s Schengen free-travel area. This will allow unrestricted movement for people and businesses within the zone. Checks at air and sea borders were lifted on 31 March 2024.
