Safety and security alert for O.R Tambo International Airport

There have been reports of a series of attacks in and around the O.R. Tambo International Airport near Johannesburg. Allegedly, airport insiders or “spotters” help criminals identify tourists or businessmen with valuable luggage and goods when they pass through the airport. The travellers are then followed and robbed.

Advice

When travelling, keep valuables with you, secured and out of sight. Safeguard your important documents, such as your passport. Avoid wearing expensive jewelry and clothing that would make one a target for thieves. Avoid withdrawing large sums of money from ATMs in public places. The government is taking measures to deal with criminal activity at the airport.
