Safety and security alert for "Southern Claw" of Haiti

The U.S. Department of State has posted an update on the safety and security situation in Haiti. Travel to areas south of Haiti (the “southern claw”) is dangerous. Since Hurricane Mathew, roads and bridges are damaged. Landslides have made some roads impassable. The widespread damage to infrastructure has caused communication problems, power outages shortages of food, water, and fuel.

The security and safety situation is unstable. Some relief groups and other vehicles have been robbed at roadblocks. Mobs have overwhelmed distribution points.

Advice

Anyone choosing to travel to Haiti should take enough water, food, fuel and medicine to last longer than the anticipated need.

If you travel to this area and see a roadblock, the advice is to turn back.

Leave any area where crowds begin to gather.

Carefully consider safety and the emergency response network when planning travel to Haiti.
