Shigellosis in Taiwanese tourists in Philippines

Three different Taiwanese tourist groups who visited the Philippine resort island of Boracay have been diagnosed with shigella bacteria infections (dysentery). Food consumed at an undisclosed restaurant patronized by all the groups may have been contaminated. Approximately 80 other members from the 3 tour groups were placed under surveillance and 18 have developed symptoms compatible with shigella infection.

Food and water that is contaminated with human waste from infected persons is a common source for these bacteria. Travellers should always exercise caution and follow strict water and food precautions while travelling.
