Learn moreTensions Amid Territory Dispute - Venezuela, Guyana
As of 7 December, tensions are high between Guyana and Venezuela amid their border dispute. On 3 December, Venezuelans voted in a referendum to support the government’s claim to the region of Essequibo. On Tuesday, Nicolas Maduro, the president of Venezuela, called for the creation of a bill to establish the “Guyana Esequiba” province and asked Venezuelan companies to enter the region “immediately” to use minerals and fossil fuels. Following this, Guyana established a Comprehensive Defense Operational Zone for the territory and intensified security measures. Venezuela has also deployed military troops at the border. On 6 December, it was reported that a Guyana army helicopter carrying senior officials was missing near the Guyana-Venezuela border. Tensions have escalated due to the missing helicopter.
The oil-rich Essequibo region has been a longstanding issue, generating disputes between the two neighboring countries.
