Wildfire in Lasithi, Crete - Greece

On 1 July, a large wildfire broke out in the mountains between the villages of Ferma, Achlia and Agia Fotia, near Ierapetra in Crete’s Lasithi region. As on 3 July, the fire has split into three main fronts centred near Ferma, Achlia and Schinokapsala and prompted the evacuation of hundreds of residents and tourists. Emergency alerts were issued via the 112 system and authorities evacuated hundreds of residents and tourists from Agia Fotia, Galini and Koutsounari. Some homes had been damaged. There were no reports of injuries. Firefighting efforts are underway.

Follow the advice of local authorities and avoid travel to the affected region until the fires are fully extinguished. Ensure evacuation from high-risk regions and plan accommodation to ensure shelter and other essential services. If travelling in the area, wear facemasks or other respiratory protective equipment to avoid inhalation of any smoke present. Persons with pre-existing heart and lung conditions should remain indoors, if possible until air quality improves.
