Zika virus in Philippines

Although only 33 cases of Zika virus infection have been reported nationwide, these cases are spread over 4 major regions including:

  • Western Visayas (provinces of Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Guimaras, Iloilo and Negros Occidental).
  • National Capital Region (metropolitan Manila).
  • Calabarzon (provinces of Batangas, Cavite, Laguna, Quezon, Rizaland).
  • Central Visayas (provinces of Bohol, Cebu and Siquijor).

Advice

Since so many people who are infected with the Zika virus have mild or no illness at all, and are not registered in official statistics, it can be inferred from the geographic distribution of the known cases that there is significant transmission of this virus across a wide geographic area in the Philippines.
