Violent Unrest in Torre Pacheco - Spain

On 15 July, violent unrest continued between North African migrants and the far-right in the Spanish town of Torre Pacheco. The clashes flared up on 11 July following an attack on an elderly man by unknown assailants. Three people of North African origin were detained on suspicion of the attack. Several far-right groups called for anti-migrant protests with some calling for renewed attacks on immigrants. Over 120 Civil Guard officers were deployed to maintain security in the town. Torre Pacheco mayor Pedro Ángel Roca called on the migrant community not to leave their homes and not to confront rioters. Further violence and unrest are likely in the area.
