Acute watery diarrhoea outbreak in Ethiopia

Health authorities have reported an outbreak of acute watery diarrhea (perhaps cholera) in Ethiopia’s second largest city, Dire Dawa. At least 127 people have been affected.

Advice

While the cause of the acute watery diarrhoea is not specified in the report, based on the symptoms, the possibility of cholera has to be considered.

All travellers can minimize the risk of exposure to this disease. Strictly observe all food and water precautions in any area where there is cholera. If gastrointestinal symptoms (e.g., vomiting and profuse watery diarrhoea) develop while visiting the affected area, travellers should seek medical care at once.
