All countries in Central America have significant numbers of dengue fever patients.

• Costa Rica - 10,183 cases
• El Salvador - almost 40,000 suspected and confirmed cases with 1 death
• Guatemala - almost 12,800 suspected and confirmed cases with 5 deaths
• Honduras - 38,590 cases
• Nicaragua - 26,386 cases with 4 deaths
• Panama - almost 2,400 suspected and confirmed cases with 1 death

Advice

All travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
