Brazil is struggling with dengue fever

Dengue fever is widely distributed in Brazil this year. Nationally, there have been at least 460,000 cases reported by the following states:

  • Pará - the most affected municipalities include Belem, Altamira, and Senador Porfirio
  • Rondonia
  • Paraná
  • Rio Grande do Sul
  • São Paulo - extensive spread of this virus throughout most of the municipalities in the state, including the city of São Paulo.
  • Acre
  • Goiás
  • Mato Grosso do Sul
  • Tocantins
  • Rio Grande do Norte
  • Bahia

Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
