Cases*, deaths and outbreaks due to dengue fever have been reported in the following countries in the Americas:

Mexico - In 2012, 50,013 confirmed cases; 17,570 cases of dengue haemorrhagic fever; States most affected: Yucatan; Campeche; Quintana Roo; Veracruz.

Argentina

  • Salvador Mazza, Salta Province - 352 cases (700 total for the entire province)

Bolivia

  • National reports - In last 4 months of 2012, 1,361 cases; 1 death; most affected departments: Beni, Pando, Santa Cruz, La Paz, Cochabamba, Chuquisaca, Tarija.

Paraguay

  • National reports - For 2012, more than 35,000 cases; 70 deaths; most affected departments: Central, Asuncion.

Peru

  • Ucayali Region - For 2012, 7,521 cases; 49 cases dengue haemorrhagic fever; 11 deaths

*Note: Due to incomplete reporting, lack of access to health care in some areas, and the fact that many persons with dengue fever may not seek medical care and be reported to health authorities, there may be many more cases in the community than are reported. Travellers to these areas can reduce their risk of exposure to dengue fever virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
