Learn moreCivil Unrest in Zimbabwe
Even though the opposition cancelled today’s protest and despite a court-ordered ban on the protests, riot police clashed with about 100 anti-government protesters in central Harare today. Police used tear gas, water cannon, and truncheons to disperse the crowd. More anti-government protests have been planned in coming weeks over the economic crisis and political repression. Today’s protests would have been the first in a nationwide series of anti-government protests. During the week of 19-23 August, demonstrations are expected in Bulawayo on 19 August, Gweru on 20 August, Mutare on 21 August and Masvingo on 22 August.
Advice
The opposition could cancel protests to avoid violence. Avoid all areas of demonstrations. The police and security officers are likely to use riot control measures and force. Be prepared for increased security, and carry identification documents.
