Colombia: Nationwide Anti-Government Demonstration on 21 January

The National Committee of Unemployment has called for a nationwide anti-government demonstration on 21 January to protest against government policies and demand economic reforms. Protests will be held in the main public squares, parks, and plazas across the country at 17:00 (local time). In the capital Bogota, the demonstration is likely to take place at Plaza Bolivar. A related disruptive protest was observed by students of the National University of Bogota on 16 January where police had to intervene to bring the situation under control.

Advice

The events are likely to be well-attended and will cause localized travel disruption in the vicinity of protest venues. Expect increased police presence in the vicinity of the main public squares, parks, and plazas across the country on the day of the protest. To minimize safety risk, avoid areas of large public gatherings or protests. Even events intended to be peaceful can escalate unexpectedly and quickly become violent.
