Dengue fever around the world (Philippines, China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore)

Cases and outbreaks of dengue fever are being reported by the following countries and localities:

  • Philippines - as of November 4, 73,815 reported cases along with 288 deaths nationwide; most affected areas Northern Mindanao, Calabarzon, Davao Region, Central Visayas, Caraga, and the National Capital Region.
  • China - sporadic cases in Hong Kong; major epidemic in Guangdong Province (41,155 cases)
  • Taiwan - major epidemic with 13,030 cases; 1,000 new cases per week; 16 deaths
  • Vietnam - Ho Chi Minh City reports at least 4,200 cases in October
  • Malaysia - major epidemics with 84,684 reported cases and 160 deaths; most affected state is Selangor; Sarawak also reports almost 2,000 cases
  • Singapore - cases declining but risk remains

Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
