Dengue fever cases and outbreaks in Mexico and Central America

Cases and outbreaks of dengue fever are being reported from the following countries:

Mexico

  • Baja California Sur - 4,601 cases with 95 cases of dengue haemorrhagic fever. Most affected municpalities include La Paz, Los Cabos, Comondu, Mulege and Loreto.

Costa Rica - 10,460 cases nationwide during 2014.

Honduras - 42,902 cases with 2,301 cases of dengue haemorrhagic fever and 4 deaths.

Panama - 5,276 cases with 20 cases of dengue haemorrhagic fever and 9 deaths.

Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
