Dengue fever cases, deaths and outbreaks have been reported in Asian countries (update)

Cases*, deaths and outbreaks due to dengue fever have been reported in the following Asian countries:

Thailand: 53,554 reported cases; 50 deaths

India:

  • Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh State: 206 cases; Increasing trend
  • Chandigarh area, Punjab State: 347 cases; 5 deaths; Increasing trend
  • New Delhi area: 910 cases; 2 deaths
  • Faridabad, Haryana State: 720 cases; 1 death; Increasing trend
  • Pune and Mumbai, Maharashtra State: 947 cases; 7 deaths; Increasing trend
  • Karnataka State: 1,043 cases; 8 deaths
  • Bokaro, Jharkhand State: 61 cases; 4 deaths

*Note: Due to incomplete reporting, lack of access to health care in some areas, and the fact that many persons with dengue fever may not seek medical care and be reported to health authorities, there may be many more cases in the community than are reported.

Travellers to these areas can reduce their risk of exposure to dengue fever virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
