Dengue fever "hot spots" in Brazil

Cases and outbreaks of dengue fever are being reported from the following areas in Brazil:

  • Paraná - city of Maringá, where cases increase 30 percent in just one week.
  • Minas Gerais - city of São João del Rei, where risk is high due to mosquito infestation
  • Mato Grosso - Sinop, Cuiabá, Rondonópolis and Várzea Grande are most affected municipalities. Two confirmed and 4 suspected deaths.
  • São Paulo - city of Sorocaba has fewer cases than last year, but dengue fever risk continues. Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
