Dengue fever in Asia and Pacific - update

Dengue fever cases, deaths and outbreaks are reported from the following countries and areas:

  • Pakistan - Sindh province where the most affected municipality is Karachi.
  • Malaysia - So far this year, there have been 18,165 reported cases. Last year outbreaks occurred in 2,988 localities of which 70 per cent were in urban areas at several states. This year, the most affected municipalities include Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Terengganu and Putrajaya.
  • Cook Islands - the number of reported cases has doubled to 50 in the first outbreak of dengue in the last 5 years.
  • Fiji - since October of last year, there has been a major epidemic of dengue fever with a total of 9,825 cases and 8 deaths. Many cases of dengue fever are not reported. Counting and reporting cases may be difficult due to lack of local access to health care. Many persons with mild illness do not seek health care. Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
