Dengue fever in India - summary

Dengue fever virus transmission is being reported by the following states and districts:

  • Delhi - National Capital Territory
  • Maharashtra - Nashik, Mumbai, Pune
  • Karnataka - Belagavi, Bengaluru, Shivamogga
  • Kerala - Kasaragod, Idukki
  • Odisha - Cuttack, Keonjhar, Barbil

The number of infected people reported in any district is generally less than 1,000, and often less than 100. This is because many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.

Many other states have reported outbreaks at one time or another. The absence of reports from other areas does not mean that there is no dengue fever transmission there.

Advice

The risk of exposure will vary from place to place and may be high in many localities.

All travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
