Large increase in cases of whooping cough in Chile

Since the beginning of this year, health officials have recorded 643 cases of whooping cough, including 5 deaths. This is a 50% increase compared to last year. The most affected areas include Santiago, Antofagasta, Coquimbo, Valparaiso, Maule, Los Rios, and Los Lagos.

Travellers are reminded that outbreaks of the whooping cough can occur anywhere in the world at any time. Travellers can reduce their risk of exposure to whooping cough by ensuring that their childhood vaccinations, including pertussis (whooping cough), are up-to-date prior to travelling.
