Hurricane SANDY leaves trail of destruction, disruption of services and flooding in Eastern USA

Hurricane SANDY made landfall in Atlantic City, New Jersey, creating a path of destruction and disruption of services in major population centres, including New York City. Localized flooding, storm surges, and high winds have caused significant damage and left millions of people without electricity. Ground and air transportation has been severely disrupted with large numbers of cancelled airplane flights. Many travellers have been stranded in large population cities such as Washington, DC, Philadelphia, and New York City. Storm warnings remain in effect throughout the northeast region, extending as far as Ontario and eastern provinces in Canada. There are reports that up to 16 people have died due to the storm. Travellers should continue to heed local emergency warnings and monitor weather advisories.
