Japanese encephalitis reports from southeast Asia

People infected with the Japanese encephalitis virus have been detected in the following countries and localities:

• Philippines - patient from Bacaca, Davao del Sur Province
• Vietnam - 2 deaths and cases reported from cities of Hanoi and Hai Phong and provinces of Bac Giang, Dien Bien, Son La, Thai Binh, Lao Cai, Thanh Hoa
• India - cases reported in Kannur district (Kerala state) and Gaya district (Bihar state)

While the total number of reported cases is not large, they do indicate that this virus is circulating in the affected areas. The risk for general travellers can vary depending on their activities in the affected area. Travellers to areas where this virus is circulating can reduce their risk of exposure to Japanese encephalitis virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Vaccination against Japanese encephalitis is recommended, especially if visiting rural rice growing areas.
