Salmonellosis in Salta, Argentina

In the first two weeks of this year (2020), 51 laboratory-confirmed infections due to salmonella bacteria have been reported by hospital authorities. In addition, there are 24 suspected cases. About two-thirds of the cases have been registered in the capital city of Salta. Investigations to find a common source for these infections are continuing.

Infections with salmonella bacteria can cause a gastrointestinal illness (fever, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal cramps) that can be mild and self-limiting to severe. Most people recover within 4 to 7 days without any special treatment other than fluids to prevent dehydration.
