South Carolina, USA, struggling with deadly flooding

The state of South Carolina is struggling with catastrophic flooding that has caused several deaths and closed roads and interstate highways. Rescue operations are underway.

Advice

The most affected area stretches from Columbia (the capital) to the coast and from Georgetown down to Charleston. The weather service has forecasted, “catastrophic flash flooding” into Monday for Berkeley County. Floodwaters washed onto Interstate Highway 95 leading to closure of more than 70 miles of the highway. Parts of all interstate highways leading out of the capital city have closed due to flooding.

A public service announcement has been issued to remind drivers to avoid driving through water on streets regardless of how shallow the water appears to be. The depth of the water may not be apparent, and a small car can be washed away in only 12 inches of flowing water.
