Transportation strike ends in Athens, Greece and traffic slowly resumes

This morning in response to a 9-day walkout of mass transit employees, police stormed a subway train depot to disperse workers who had gathered there. After facing the possibility of arrest, some workers have returned to their jobs and traffic is slowly resuming. However, the general secretary of the GSEE private sector union has called for a strike in February against austerity measure, so disruptions due to protests will continue.

Travellers should be aware of the ongoing protests against austerity measures in Greece, and also monitor local news and alerts. Travellers should also avoid public gatherings and protests when in foreign countries as the situation can become dangerous without warning.
