Violent Protests in Angola

On 28 July, minibus taxi associations began a three-day strike in Angola to protest against a hike in the price of diesel by one-third. Violence was reported during demonstrations. According to local media, at least three people have been killed and many arrested following looting incidents and clashes with police. The police used tear gas and smoke grenades, also firing shots into the air to try to restore calm. The US Embassy in Angola issued an alert for possible violence during continued protests on 30 July. The embassy has urged US citizens to remain vigilant and limit non-essential movement within Luanda.

Advice

Further violence is possible. Minimize safety risks by being vigilant and aware of your surroundings. Familiarize yourself with exits and exit routes through crowds, and avoid the middle of large crowds. Be ready to react very quickly to any sign of an emergency. Plan for travel disruption.
