Malaria is far greater than dengue in India

Through July, nationwide, there have been almost 420,000 people diagnosed with malaria (with 119 deaths) compared to only 12,255 cases of chikungunya and 27,879 cases of dengue.

While malaria is clearly a high risk for many travellers to India, the risk of other mosquito borne viruses like dengue and chikungunya may also be high in many localities where infected people do not seek medical care for these infections.

Travellers to any region where malaria transmission is occurring can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Anti-malaria medication is recommended. Avoiding mosquito bites will also reduce the risk of acquiring other viruses spread by mosquitoes.
