Learn moreUpdate: Airport Closures, High Alert for Lewotobi - East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia
On 08 July, four airports in Lewoleba, Maumere, Labuan Bajo, and Ruteng were temporarily closed due to spreading volcanic ash from Mount Lewotobi’s eruption. Affected airports are - Wunopito Airport, Fransiskus Xaverius Seda Airport, Komodo International Airport, and Sales Lega Airport. Multiple flights were cancelled as well; as of 09 July, delays are possible through the day.
Lewotobi remains at the highest ALERT LEVEL IV. Very high seismic activity continues to be detected at the volcano, including dozens of deep and shallow volcanic and continuous tremors. More airport closures may be announced if the situation worsens in the coming days.
Advice
Observe the exclusion zone and do not engage in/conduct activities around 6 km of the eruption center for Mount Lewotobi. In case of eruption, avoid non-essential travel due to thick ash cover, low visibility, and respiratory risks. Check with the airport or your travel agent/airline to determine if your travel plans are affected. Contact the respective local authorities to better understand regulations and restrictions of the mountain area.
